Born in 1921 (Woodbridge Q2-1921 4A:1997) the son of William Henry James and Mary Jane BROOKS (née BARHAM).
In the 1939 register, at 23 Woolnough Road, Woodbridge were his father William H J [3-7-1892] constructional engineer ; his mother Mary J [11-2-1890]; brother William E J [9-2-1914] a house painter and his wife Ivy Agnes [8-12-1915]. In Q3-1943 in Newmarket, he married Iris Marjory HETHERINGTON, c/o 3 Newton Terrace, Newmarket. She is believed to have come from Durham. Neither have been identified on the 1939 register. |

The Corps of Military Police were granted the "Royal" title in 1946 in recognition of their war service. The full title was to be the Corps
of Royal Military Police (C.R.M.P.) to avoid confusion with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.).

On 4th August 1944, at Somervieu, enemy aircraft dropped a bomb on unit location after being caught in A.A>barrage. 4 killed, 24 wounded,mostly by blast (Unit War diary WO 171/3357 - part of 2nd Army, 21st Army Group. |
